Originally designed and built by me and my mate Blair Murphy. We made a pair of motorised longboards for ourselves, and have since helped make another four for our friends using the same design. These have a range of ~10km, top speed of 30kph, powered by a 2.7kW (3.5hp) Turnigy brushless motor. very nice
How do you glue the two halves together?
Epoxy + adhesive additive. The parts were designed with a 10-15mm lap joint
@@maxbetteridgedesign do you have video how to glue bottom and top tank?
I just started up on gravity sketch and want to make videos like these but I thought I’d need a green screen. Slick how did you manage to get that overlay view of the model and you in action?
I think a green screen allows you to see the vr environment in the vid but I’ve never tried it with green screen. Just have to use MRC to calibrate the webcam with the vr controllers, then use OBS to overlay the feed from the vr onto the webcam and record it. It’s a bit complicated to get setup, but works well once it’s configured
@@maxbetteridgedesign thank you for that! Keep it up 👍🏼
Would like to know more details on your build. Is there a way to contact you?
Sure thing, easiest to contact me via my website. There’s also build photos on my website www.maxbetteridgedesign.com/contact
Can you make the same for me I can pay you. Recently I had faild a patent I need it for that
What wavelength of lazer are you using to cut that?
Just regular co2 laser (120w if I remember correctly)
What is the name of the band / background music?
This like 10th time iv seen this vid and i love wene the tank comes out of the mold
Can you do this? I have one in need of custom
Sure, send me a message through my website: www.maxbetteridgedesign.com
I’m in love. This will stand the times.
Is this your fiest fiberglass job? sure looks like it. Delamination air bubbles all though out the lay-up. Have you heard of a roller?
also it will not fit in the bike! the flange was left in place while doing the other side!
oohhhhh that's nice
What weight was your first layer?
Do you use specific ethanol proof resin?
I used standard epoxy resin for the layup, then used a special epoxy based tank liner made by Caswell to line the inside. We don't have ethanol in our fuel in New Zealand , not sure if it'll hold up to ethanol.. I did some research before I picked the resin and found that the standard epoxy was the most chemical resistant option available.
thats really great work! I assume you then do the same for the bottom of the tank? and how do you join the top sides with the bottom plate when doing the layup?
dudekidPL thanks! Have a scroll through my instagram @max_betteridge_design or on my website maxbetteridgedesign.com . there are photos of the finished tank there. The base piece is inset about 10-15mm and there is a 10mm lap joint all the way around the bottom edge. It's just glued together with thickened epoxy and sealed with caswell fuel tank liner. @@maxbetteridgedesign thanks a lot for the quick reply! I had a look at your Instagram and gave you a follow. You do great and inspiring work. I wish to do a carbon tank on my cb750 from 1980 in the future and your content is a great help
man iv seen this vid so much times and it keeps me pumpt love your work bro and your work space
loads of carbon fibre vids on youtube and not one of them goes into actual detail on how to do it, all timelapse with shit music in the background
I watch all my video muted
Amateur at best...You screwed up....you need to do one side first and remove flange material then do the second side. Then put some shallow keys in so both sides line up perfectly for final part lay-up. Also seeing the waves in the mold shows you don't have what it takes....leave this to a professional not a garage hack..... Spreading stupidity on UA-cam doesn't help making stuff.
Wow my first real keyboard warrior attack * tries not to get emotional * Yes I am an amateur. Yes this is basically the first composite project I have done. Yes I know the method I used to make the mould halves was unconventional, but actually well considered and worked well and surprised a lot of people.. (if nothing else it meant I could lay up both halves of the mould in one go, re-alignment of the halves was a total non-issue because I bolted them together with some play in the holes so could adjust it until I couldn’t feel the join with my finger). Take a look at the result, it actually passes most people’s test of being above amateur: www.maxbetteridgedesign.com/flat-white www.bikeexif.com/ducati-monster-400-cafe-racer And when people ask if I did the work myself I can proudly say yes (except the paint - paint is much harder than composite work)
And it shows. I am a professional. It makes guys like us cringe...you have to be willing to put up with criticism when you put out substandard information. Sorry to damage your ego son.
Blow us all Dave - Im a professional car designer for a major auto company i have 3 masters in eng and design and i i have NOTHING BUT RESPECT for people who TRY NEW THINGS... had a look at your page... cant see much to brag about - if you dont like what you see... SCHOOL US and do better
Our company mainly produce the basalt fiber if you are interested please below the message
How does it hold gas WTF?
Lol
Cool
Dont you remove the flange in the midle before laying up the other side? thats weird!!
Yep.. Pretty weird. This way actually worked out well though. The buck was made in two parts with a split down the middle. When I put the flange in I separated the two halves and sandwiched the flange material in between the halves, spacing the two halves of the buck out by the thickness of the flange material. This way I could do both sides of the mould in a single layup. And when the two halves of the mould were put together they matched up fine and were the correct size.
nice! thanks for the quick answer!
Hi from London.impressive job, seen your website, only wish you are not at the other side of the world :D
Fiberglass won't melt in gasoline? Just curious... I wanna try this.
So far so good.. I used epoxy rather than polyester resin which is more resilient to fuel. I also used Caswell fuel tank liner which is a phenol novolac epoxy which is even more resilient to fuel. The fuel where I live contains no ethanol so probably wouldn't cause any issues no matter what resin it was made of.
Max Betteridge ok. Thanks... It's just I've got my second project, a honda benly but it's tank was all rusted out with holes. Seems hopeless...
I have tried glass fibre resin inside my bike rusted petrol tank but with time resin got reacted with petrol and started melting blocked carburetor, it's bad experience but it can be sealed from outside fabricating with glass fibre and resin...,
So where is the bottom part and how is it connected to each other?

@@maxbetteridgedesign interesting, I will have a look at your website. I was asked to make a tank for a Yamaha motorcyle, so I need info about the whole procedure
Hey man I'm from india but currently in Auckland. Can you suggest me the best place to buy motor cycle and also any advise for new riders in Auckland
ameya haldankar Hey, most New Zealanders would buy their bikes online from trademe but I can recommend a few places who will give you good service - carbon garage (in the city near the waterfront) or motormagnet (in penrose) will look after you well
I can certainly appreciate the quality of this video, both subject and execution of the cinematography. Beautiful craftsmanship both of them. I would love to see more details about the production of the fuel tank!
Thanks pål, I'm still an amateur on both the craftmanship and cinematography ;) I have a few more videos on the fuel tank including - ua-cam.com/video/2_lYc6ZfxpE/v-deo.html. And a full build thread on www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=68876.0
I found your website in the meantime. Even more impressive! The attention to detail and quality is beautifully insane:) Have to say the stamp dye for the tank holder bands/strips took the prize:) Keep it up, and Promise me you wont stop creating! ( I have a feeling you do not need some stranger on the internet to encourage you to do that, but I really hope to see more from you!)
I have read that the main advantage of basalt fibre is it's higher heat resistance. But what epoxy to use for high heat resistance?
Where'd you source the fiber?
Where all good things come from: www.aliexpress.com/item/260GSM-twill-Basalt-fiber-fabric-cloth-1m-1m/32347114777.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.jYfNnn
basalt-fabric.com/ has it for $10.36 a square meter ali express is $14 a sq/m
Dude. Sorted build. This looks like a blast to ride. Well done.
Would you happen to be making Ducati Fuel tanks for sale?
finally, someone who uses basalt fiber!!!!! Keep up the work mate!!!
